These men are window washers at a children’s hospital in Pittsburg. Some might think the job is menial, but to the kids who are horribly ill, looking out their window seeing their favorite superhero at their window makes all the pain go away for a bit. And that would make the job worthwhile.

A Beautiful Walkable Map for Berlin’s 775th Anniversary

In 2012, Berlin celebrated its 775th anniversary. Among the many festivities, several large open-air exhibitions were constructed, including a beautiful walkable map of Berlin, called City of Diversity, placed in front of the largest church in the city.

The walkable map was built as a celebration of Berlin’s many years of immigration history and diversity. It was constructed by a group of artists using a 1:775 scale and 274 stencils, featuring giant colored pins with fascinating explorable facts and stories about migration to Berlin on them. Each colored pin explored a different current or historic topic of diversity in the city, ranging from religion and politics to music and culture.

I took this last year, but in retrospect, I think it’s my strongest piece from high school.

Working on this project really made me examine my own opinions, preconceptions and prejudices about “slutty” women and women who choose to cover all of their skin alike. I used to assume that all women who wore Hijabs were being oppressed, slut-shame, and look down on and judge any woman who didn’t express her sexuality in a way that I found appropriate.

I’d like to think I’m more open now.

I took the rest of the week off from work for a much needed break. Since the holidays, I have been working full tilt on some really exciting projects…which of course lead me to completely destroying my wrist. The work thankfully shows the sacrifice I put into it, but dear sweet mother of god it hurts to even pick up a coffee mug. But of course being who I am I didn’t exactly start my break off well and ended up spending all day drawing…well, Batman.

I like Batman. I mean I really really really like Batman. In fact, I like Batman more than most things in this world. Hell-bent on vengeance after the death of his parents? Hard boiled detective? Elements of film noir and art deco? Bizarre science? Babes? Running around on rooftops? A long list of enemies mainly stocked with lunatics, mobsters, and people trained in long forgotten martial arts? It’s like Batman was MADE for me to be obsessed with.

But modern applications of The Bat? Their is a lot left to be desired. Sure, the Arkham games are fun….but they are not Batman. It feels more like you are playing as an ex-college football player with the detective skills akin to your pet dog. And jesus, don’t even get me started on the Nolan movies. He might as well have cast a grumpy Tom Cruise and shoved him into riot gear. No, these aren’t MY Batman. They lack basically everything I love about Batman! My little nerdy heart has been sinking for well over a decade from this. I’ll stick with Batman: The Animated Series and Miller’s “Year One” thank you very much. (Though, Paul Pope’s “Batman: Year 100” is pretty fucking amazing)

When I’m investigating Internet things for the bloggy, a pretty good barometer for whether I should post something or not is: “would I want to put my mouth on it?” I find this eliminates nearly 1/5th of all possible candidates, though I never once thought to instead ask: “would I let it put its mouth on me?”, because Ronit’s ceramic tableware possesses mouth things with toofs and tongues for licking inanimate funtime. Part of the Kama Sex and Design exhibit at Triennale Design Museum in Milan, Italy, showing through March 10th, 2013.
